Independent review of Comcare legislation released
The Australian Government has released the independent review of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988, the legislation underpinning the Comcare workers’ compensation scheme.
The review examined how the Comcare scheme, which covers workers in the Australian Public Service and employees from major national private corporations, could be reformed to improve outcomes for injured workers, and adapt to new and emerging workplace challenges.
The independent panel was chaired by Ms Justine Ross with Professor Robin Creyke AO and Mr Greg Isolani.
Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Amanda Rishworth thanked the independent panel for its report and said the Government would closely consider the review findings.
“The review found there was a need to modernise the scheme to better support injured and ill workers with recovery and return to work and ensure its long-term sustainability,” Minister Rishworth said.
“Our Government is committed to the effective operation and sustainability of the Comcare scheme, so it can continue to fulfil its critical function as the world of work undergoes significant shifts.
“The Government will carefully consider the review recommendations with a view to progressing necessary reforms,” Minister Rishworth said.
