National TAFE Day: Recognising TAFE at the heart of Australia's future

At a time when the qualifications and skills produced by TAFE have never been more important to Australia, today’s National TAFE Day is an important opportunity to celebrate the contributions of TAFEs, their teachers and students.

Every day, TAFE delivers world-class qualifications that open doors to secure, well-paid careers and create real opportunities for Australians from all walks of life. 

The Albanese Government is focused on growing these opportunities for Australians, including through Free TAFE, with new program data released today revealing over 850,000 enrolments and over 275,000 course completions were supported by Free TAFE between 1 January 2023 and 30 June 2026.

Through practical, hands-on and specialist training, TAFE equips students with the skills employers need, helping people increase their earning potential, build rewarding careers and make a meaningful contribution to society.

Whether it's building more homes, supporting an ageing population through the care economy, or preparing workers for emerging industries and technologies, TAFE is critical to ensuring Australia has the skilled workforce needed to meet future demand.

This success would not be possible without the dedication of TAFE teachers, trainers and support staff across the country, whose expertise, commitment and passion help deliver high-quality vocational education and training that changes lives and strengthens communities.

It is expected that by 2050 around 80 per cent of adult Australians will need a tertiary qualification – either VET, university or a combination of the two. TAFE will continue to play an essential role in ensuring Australia meets this target and the opportunities that come from it.
